Surefire Ways to Get Kids Excited for an Upcoming Family Trip

Going on a family trip with kids can be an amazing experience filled with new sights, foods, and activities. However, it’s important to properly prepare your children so they know what to expect and look forward to the trip. Here are some tips for getting kids pumped up for an upcoming family vacation:

Talk About the Destination

Weeks before your trip, start talking to your kids about where you’ll be going. Show them pictures of the place, look up fun facts together, and discuss what you’ll do there as a family. Get them interested in the destination by highlighting the most kid-friendly attractions.

Make a Countdown

A visual countdown can help build eager anticipation. Have your kids make a paper chain with links to tear off leading up to the trip, or mark off days on a calendar. You can also let them pack a small countdown bag with trip-related items like books on the location, language apps, new toys for the flight, etc.

Watch Movies Set in the Location

Films and shows can introduce kids to the culture and scenery of where you’ll be visiting. Pick age-appropriate titles together set in the destination to get them familiar with the place. For a trip to Japan you could watch Hayao Miyazaki films like My Neighbor Totoro.

Read Books About the Location

Reading books together is another great way to get kids excited. There are many children’s books that take place in different countries and cities. For a trip to Japan, you could read our book, Honeybunny the Unipuppy Visits Japan to introduce your kids to Japanese culture, landmarks, food, and more through story.

Study the Language

If there will be a language barrier, help your kids learn a few basic words and phrases in the native language. Download language apps, watch tutorial videos, and practice together. We found YouTube videos showing basic phrases was immensely helpful. Your kids will have a sense of accomplishment and be able to better connect with locals.

Let Them Help Plan
